Jerusalem – The underground city - Part 1
Many poems and songs were written, in many languages, describing the beauty of this outstanding city – its walls, towers, domes, churches, synagogues and mosques, its markets – and the people of Jerusalem.
However, its history, which over the years has piled up, had created many archeological levels. In some places the gap between your shoes and mother earth is more then 4 meter high – and that history is mostly berried under the ground. In some places – such as the western wall, southern wall excavations, the City of David and The pool of Bethesda, those ancient walls are under the sun. But in order to reveal more of its glory, we need to go under it's streets.
One may spend more then a day, away from the heath of the boiling Israeli summer's sun, and have a real COOL time, in naturally air-conditioned amazing sites.
If you are looking for things to do in Jerusalem – here is a special offer for the individual traveler.
Our tour will start next to the Dung Gate. Make your way down, and take the first right turn, and on your left is the City of David (10 Min, walk from the gate)
Ultimately, you may want to start in the beginning. For that , enter into the City of David excavations .Walk into Warne's Shaft and you will find yourself walking
down a tunnel that was dug more the 3 millennia ago, making an access to the people of the city to their water source.
At the end of that tunnel you may choose in between two other tunnels- the dry one or, much more exiting- Hezekiah's tunnel. Make sure you have flif-flops or some other shoes, and a flash light.
For the next 40 minutes you will find yourself walking in cool water , about 1 meter high , surrounded by darkness , in a tunnel which was carved trough the solid rock by king Hezekiah, more then 2,7oo years ago . By the time the sun will hit your eyes, it will be close to an hour and a half you were under the ground.

Jerusalem – The underground city - Part 2
A short walk under the sun, and, within the same site, you will walk into the drainage tunnel of King's Herods street. That tunnel was constructed to collect the rain and the sewerage from Jerusalem's southern part, some 2000 years ago, and was used by Jewish rebellions during the last days of the great rebellion, in the year 70, when the Roman soldiers burned Jerusalem and destroyed it.
Ascending this 2000 years old tunnel, you will walk beneath the "modern", 500 years old wall of the city, and find yourself at the Davidson archeological park. It is highly recommended to view the presentation of the ancient Jewish 2nd temple, in a basement of a palace built around the year 700 AD.
A short walk will get you to the Wailing Wall area, in a passageway, at he northern part of the piazza, you may enter the Wailing Wall tunnel (pre-booking is necessary). An amazing hour and a half guided tour will take you through about a quarter of a mile walk beneath the houses and the streets of the city. Towards the end of the tour you'll find yourself in an underground water reservoir. Although seems huge, it is only 40% of its full size. End the tour at the street level, walk out to the bright sun, and walking across the street you will be walking above the reservoir you've just been to. That street is the very famous Via Delarosa.
Cross the street to the left and enter the Acce Homo convent. There you will find the other 60% of the reservoir, and plenty more very interesting artifacts. After walking in that underground labyrinth for about an hour, you will find yourself back on the street, were you've been earlier.
Turn to the right (west) and walk down the Via Delarosa for about 150 meters. On your right hand side there is a Greek-orthodox church. Walk down to the left and you will find yourself in a complex of caves, used in ancient time as a prison. In one of them, so the Greek Orthodox believes, Jesus was imprisoned the night before his crucifixion. On your way out, please make sure you leave a donation to the church.

On your way up, mind your head, and please do not forget to leave a donation to the church.
Your next underground experience is waiting for you in the renovated Jewish Quarter. On the eastern side of the ''Hurva" Synagogue piazza is the entrance to the Herodias Quarter.
